On this day 3 years ago I hopped off a plane at Orlando International Airport to start my first day working for Automattic. I was going from 10 years of being self-employed, to being part of a globally distributed company – and about to meet ~1000 new colleagues.

I’m excited to say that 3 years in – so many of those colleagues have now become much more than that – I consider them valuable friends. I met my teammates for the first time that week – and have since enjoyed hanging out with them both virtually and in person.

That week was overwhelming, but a blast. Getting to meet so many people and hang out doing awesome things (like playing a live concert for the closing party, and visiting Harry Potter world).

But that was just the start of the three years. And it’s safe to say the decision to move on from self-employment was a good one. The last 2 years have been challenging for everyone – and it’s safe to say that without working at Automattic for the last 3 years I’m not sure how the family would be holding up.

Having a stable job where I was already working from home was a great baseline. But I’m working somewhere I have an impact, where I am challenged, where I know my work is appreciated.

And I’m looking forward to many more years.

(I’m also looking forward to when I once again get to see my colleagues friends in person).
