WordCamp Sydney was held over the weekend – with over 200 devs, designers, site owners and users swarming to the University of Sydney to share their love of WordPress, meet fellow devotees and hopefully learn a few new tricks.

I had the pleasure of speaking on the Saturday presenting a few thoughts on how Responsive Design can be brought through to a WordPress site. I had a blast speaking, and had a lot of interesting chats with people afterwards. You can find the slides from my talk at the bottom of this post.

I took copious amounts of notes, but thought I would mention a few particular highlights for me.
Brent Shepher  (@thenbrent)opened proceedings with a brief look at the history of WordPress, and  what we might be able to expect from the future, and Joseph Ortenzi (@wheelyweb) gave us a primer on keeping our website inclusive – a reminder that ALL web designers and developers need.

Other highlights for me included Chris Aprea (@chrisaprea) talking about child themes, and Sofia Woods (@ShortieDesigns) sharing her experiences of working with Community Organisations.

I’ve been using WordPress for a really long time – but this is the first time I’ve had an appreciation for the community gathered around it, and the extent to which it is used, and even has Australian based core developers. It was a real eye opener – and would have been valuable if even only for that.

Massive thanks to the organisers @thewebprincess, @dogshindleg, @astroboysoup and @AlisonVanHees for all their incredibly hard work.
I already can’t wait for next year.

BTW. Here’s the slides from my presentation.

I think I said on Twitter that I appreciated your talk.

It was so timely for me! A client had just asked me on Friday to responsive up a design she was working on, and your tip to create break points at the points where the design breaks, rather than specific device sizes was so good. I think it made the decision making and implementation a lot easier, and is a great tip because there really are a lot of different resolution screens out there now.
